Again, you need to be clear about whether you got the error message during the install or whether it happened when you tried to run the program. There's an easy way to find out. Look in your Applications folder. Is Encore there or not?

Well friends, all of this is now a moot point, because I was just able to install and run Encore 4.5.6 from the CD. Why did it work this time? I can't be sure, but before I installed it I rebooted my MacBook Pro again, and I think this is what made the difference. I'm no geek, but I think those software updates had something to do with the problem. In any case it's OK now. Thanks for all your suggestions, I really appreciate it!

I'm glad you're back in business but I'm confused. I thought you said you bought Encore 5, not 4.5...?

Hi polarbreeze, originally I bought Encore 4.5.6 and since it was crashing all the time on my MacBook I was advised to download the update to 5.0.5. Strangely, the older version hasn't crashed so far on my new MacBook Pro, so I'm just going to let well enough alone...

Your problem is 4.5.6. Get rid of it completely.

4.5.6 is buggier than all getout and never was an official release version (it wasn't). It was an advanced beta while waiting for 5 - which wasn't any good on the Mac till 5.0.5 (which still has a few issues).

4.5.5, which should be on your CD as the OS 9 version, is much better and works just fine in 10.x. If you still have problems, remove Encore, install 5.0.5. If you need the functionality of 4.5.5 such as the ability to open earlier files, edit ending boxes etc. - in other words, you need to deal with the limitations of 5.0.5, install 4.5.5.

I use both versions. Although most of my work is now done in 5.0.5, there are a few things that still only work in 4.5.5. I save my file, open in 4.5.5, save and reopen in 5.0.5. It's quick and always easier than the convoluted workarounds suggested in 5.0.5.

HI,

We just found out that our new (now former) replicating company ran some sort of anti virus program on our cds before they replicated them and there by stripped the fonts from the mac versions. Argh, it's just as bad as these companies that insist on re-mastering/compressing audio CDs before the replicate.

We have published the solution on our knowledgebase, http://www.gvox.com/support_base.php, type the keywords "Mac Fonts". In this solution we have the fonts and a video to show how to clean up the old and install the new.

The download version is not affected by this problem, please contact us if you would like a download link.

Hi Richard,

Can you tell me how the fonts are installed from the Mac download version and, if they are installed, where they are located? The software appears to work whether or not Anastasia is installed. It also appears that I can't use my own customised version of the font with the download version.

With thanks for your kind assistance.

HI Pasadera,

You are correct. Encore 5.05 Mac will run regardless of Anastasia being installed in a normal manner (as described below.)

Most applications that use specialized fonts store them in user/Library/Fonts. Encore does not.

Encore stores its fonts in its application package. The directory path: is Encore.app/Contents/Resources. To open Encore's Contents folder, right click the Encore application and choose Show Package Contents. (Encore will not run if the various Ansastasia font resources are not in this folder. A normal, healthy Encore install will include these font resources, and a number of other fonts as well.)

Oddly the video that Gvox added to its knowledge base shows us how to use Font Book to perform a normal font installation. I believe this does not effect Encore in any way; however it is handy and necessary if you want to edit Encore score PDFs in an application like Adobe Illustrator, which otherwise would have no access to Anastasia.

Thanks so much, q - that explains it perfectly. Sadly, this is just another factor that sends me back to Encore 4.2.3 and the now-ancient OS 9.

I'm so hoping that Encore will be back on par before that old G4 desktop conks out!

Kindest regards.

Hi pasadera,

Sounds like you have 5.05 installed and running. So what's the factor that sends you back to Encore 4.2.3?

You mentioned previously "I can't use my own customised version of the font with the download version." Is that the issue?

Hi q,
Yes, that's one issue among many.
Possibly the Windows version prints out certain characters (accidentals, for example) better than the Mac version. In the Mac version these would benefit, in my view, from some tweaking - I find them too narrow and too close (default position) to the note.
Best wishes to you.

You should have 4.5.5 on your CD - or the download. Although it says OS9, it does work in 10.6.4. It uses the Anastasia font in the normal manner through the font book. Although I use it to add functionality to/deal with bugs in 5.0.5, it also opens old files that 5.0.5 cannot.

Thanks so much, Mike, that's very useful to know. I've forgotten why I have continued to use Encore 4.2.3 in OS 9 but assume that I must have had some problems with v.4.5.5 in OSX 10.4.11.

All the best,
