Encore 5 manual v3.1 - "Chapters"

Postby Doug Kerr » Thu Aug 27, 2009 5:17 pm

In the manual, there are frequent references to various chapters, in terms of chapter number and title . But there are no chapter numbers shown in the Table of Contents, foreclosing a convenient way for quickly user to locate the chapter listing of interest to find the starting page, or to find the topic (or use the link to the chapter or topic of interest).

I recommend that the chapter entries in the Table of Contents include chapter numbers.

In addition, it is questionable editorial practice to use the spelled out number of the chapter in the chapter opening pages and the numeric form in text. Actually, spelled out numbers are never good for human recognition.

I recommend that the chapter numbers in the chapter opening pages be in numeric form. [Not a big issue, though.]

In a similar vein, though page footers contain the page number and chapter title ... they contain no chapter number. The inclusion of chapter numbers in page footers would be quite helpful!

The footers of the chapter Using the Palettes (pages 80 to 105) are still missing page numbers.

Somewhere between Manual 2009.1 and 2009.3.1 the main chapters got retitled "The Menus - Mac" and ".The Menus for Windows" (a good thing!), and both numbered "Chapter Seven" (a confusing thing!).

1. They probably should not both be "Chapter Seven".

2. The footers should contain the "- Mac" and "- Windows".

3. If you wish to pick a nit, the "- Mac" and "for Windows" should read the same; either " - " or " for "

I just noticed - in v2009.3.1 there is no Chapter 5! So, "Using the Palettes" should be Chapter 5 and "The Menus - Mac" should be Chapter 6. "The Menus for Windows" will then be correct at chapter 7.

There are also two Chapter 8s, "Voices in Encore" and "Advanced Topics", followed by Chapters 9 through 12.

Chapter Numbers remain uncorrected in 2009.3.2

Actual__v3.2___Title
Place___Num

1_______1____Tutorial
2_______2____Selecting
3_______3____Moving
4_______4____Score Window
5_______6____The Palettes
6_______7____ Menus - Mac
7_______7____Menus - Windows
8_______8____Voices
9_______8____Advanced Topics
10______9____MIDI Setup
11_____10____MIDI and Encore
12_____11____Printing
13_____12____Percussion Staff

In addition, could you put the Chapter Numbers in the TOC also?

Also (not a big deal!), Chapter 1 starts at Page 21 even though you're used letters for the first 20 pages of TOC. Shouldn't you restart the actual text at Page 1?

Regards,

Bob

Thanks for pointing out these chaptering errors Bob!

As mentioned before, the User Manual shows the same footer for the Windows and Mac menu chapters: Menus.

I think it's extremely important that the "Menus" chapters get footers that match the chapter title:

The footer of the Menus - Mac chapter should be Menus - Mac

The footer of the Menus - Windows chapter should be Menus - Windows
A number of times I'm been in the Windows menu area thinking it covered both platforms. Very confusing.

BTW, why not have 2 versions of the manual, one for each platform...
Encore isn't - by far - the only soft with such a Mac/Win mixture, but that isn't really convenient, and you certainly wouldn't be criticized for doing better than others ;-)
