MIDI-Setup

Up to now, I could always hear what I wrote by the loud speakers. Now I can only hear it over the key board if Port A and B are set to MPU. If I set them back to wavetable, I cannot hear anything over the loud speakers. Ernst

Go to the Windows Control Panel, double click on Sounds and Audio Devices
Then click on the Advanced button in the Device Volume box to check your volume sliders.
The SW Synth volume slider gets inadvertently turned down.
Put that slider back to the top and you will have sound again.

Yeah, this a problem I had for some time before finding the solution. What causes it? and can one avoid it happenning?

Microsoft Media Player.
At every update of MS MP, MS cripples your settings.

Stop using MS Mediaplayer. Switch to K-Lite codec Packs, including Media Player Classic, enables playing Quicktime, Real, and ALL dozends of other media formats, without a glitch!!
Open Source software, and free too.
