I am presently engaged in engraving Haydn's APOTHECARY in Japanese for a local publisher.

It calls for 4 voices and piano accompaniment. The publisher wants a long pdf from p. 1 to p.193 (end).
This involves making a staff sheet layout with six staves.

That rascal Haydn writes a staff or two with one voice, then later adds other voices until all four singers are howling away. This means a lot of hiding staves until the next voice comes in, then opening.

I have no problem hiding staves on my 4.5.5 on a Mac Os 9.1 but when I try to open a hidden stave I get the message:

ASSERTION (Staff1s visible (Staff) failed in" score x.cpp.", line 871. This happens EVERYTIME I try to show a hidden staff and the message is always the same.

And the system crashes, and I lose everything not saved to that point. So I have to SAVE each time before I open a hidden stave and restart.
This consumes a horrific amount of time and temper.

I asked about this on Mar. 29, and I see 42 people have read the post but NOBODY has offered any advice, not even the indefatigable Matt. who always
faithfully replies to my stupid questions.

Has anyone else run into this problem, and if so, how did you get around it? At this rate it's going to take several months to finish 193 pages, and this would run about 35¢ an hour! And it ain't worth it!

That seems very strange, sorry you have that problem. This might sound like an idea with no-end but out of interest do you have a different zoom level other to the default "Constant Scale" selected when showing the desired staves? Are you running Mac OS 9.1 in a virtual machine?

I know this doesn't help, but I've tested Show/Hide staves on Encore 4.5 (under Mac OS 10.4.11) and with Encore 5.03 (also under Mac OS 10.4.11.) I have no problem with either scenario.

I know you're using Encore 4.5 with Mac OS 9.1, but I can't test that combination.

If I recall, Encore 5 is not an option for you because it doesn't support Japanese in text blocks?
