Playback problem

Postby maiya » Thu Mar 17, 2011 12:41 pm

Encore 5.0.2

I get slightly erratic playback when I have to adjust anything having to do with the timing of a measure. The affected notes tend to sound as if they were marked staccato, no matter what duration they are or what type of playback is applied. This happens, for instance, if I change my mind about using swing playback. Meaning, I apply swing playback to a song, decide it shouldn't be swing, so I remove the swing playback and choose "Measures | Align playback" to fix the playback. It loses the swing, but some of the notes cut off during payback as if they were staccato. It also happens when I change note durations, such as changing one note from quarter to half, another from half to quarter...that type of thing. Is there a way to fix the playback when this happens?

As it appears (Doug found out), this sequence of actions does not result in the same situation as started with.
You cannot undo 'Swing playback' this way.
What you could try, to correct the effect of 'Swing Playback' is:
  1. Select the affected notes
  2. From the measures menu, choose 'Swing Playback'
    The Swing Playback dialog shows.
  3. Set 'Amount of swing' to 50% (equal note timing, no swing), and click on OK.
This corrects the notes starting times.
  4. From the Notes menu, choose Change Duration,
    The Change Duration dialog shows.
  5. Below Play duration, set 'Play duration' to 95%, clik on OK
    This corrects the note durations.

kind regards

Okay, I'm back. I think I have finally figured out, based on Eveline's very helpful advice, how to get my files to play in the proper time and durations. I have to get everything in and make all the corrections to timings. When I know everything is completely done, then I have to select everything and "align playback". Only then can I apply swing timing. I haven't kept good enough records, so I'm not sure if all the steps I've settled on are necessary, but I change note durations to 100, align playback, change note durations to 90, align playback, apply swing rhythm. I could leave it at 100, but that's too legato for some things.

At least I have finally been successful at fixing the raggedy playback problems. Whew! It would be so nice if it would just work.

I have one playback problem left. Occasionally, I'll be playing back a song and all of a sudden it will just stop playing. I can start it again, of course, but we use the program for rehearsing, so it's disruptive when that happens. Does anyone know what causes that and if there's something I can do to eliminate it?

Thanks,
Maiya

Thanks for reporting back. Nice to know it works!

IMHO that should be possible. The best solution is: Good MIDI-processing hardware, no USB.
MIDI-Interface ESI ESP1010e
MIDI-Interface ESI MaXiO 032e
MIDI-Interface RME HDSPe AIO
Second best: dedicate your computer completely to MIDI (no other tasks).

Not enough free memory?
Can you please switch on your Task manager (with Ctrl+Alt+Del, choose Task manager). Choose the third tab. You will see graphs, reflecting the amount of memory and processing power used. Resize the Task manager and place it in sight but out of the way. Then start playing back a song and look at the graphs.
Can you please report the effect of playback on the system resources?

Thanks!

Sorry to be so slow at getting back to this. I haven't tried Eveline's recommendation yet, but low memory might be the problem. I often have a whole slew (slough?) of songs open at the same time, as I use Encore for singing rehearsals...I open all the songs at once, we rehearse the first song, I close it, we move on to the next song, I close it, etc.

I'll try what you recommended, Eveline, and report back.

Thanks!

Now on to ask a new question (in a new post, of course).
