Lyrics and voice assignment

Postby abhunkin on Thu Mar 11, 2010 10:36 pm

I'm on Encores 4.5 and WinXP.

Unknowingly and inadvertently, I did an initial page setup not by selecting "New", but by modifying the piano layout to three "independent" staves (modifying brackets/braces and adding a staff).

I then entered my complete men's choral piece - except for lyrics. When entering lyrics, I discovered that whereas staff one was properly assigned to voice 1, staff 2 was assigned to voice 5, and staff 3 to voice 7. So, entering a single-line lyric for staves 2 and 3 is way out of line (down too low) for these voices, and there is no observable way to move them appropriately under their melodic line. (I *presume* that this is because lyric placement is vertically determined by voice selection.)

Obviously, each staff should be set to Voice 1; but I can't manage that at this point. I *can* cut and paste back individual staves to a different voice number, but doing so confuses other staves using voice 1 and makes them do weird things (such as disappear).

Is there any solution, or do I need to be resigned to renotating my second and third staves, if not all three of them?

(It would really be nice if Encore had some kind of global voice reassignment feature. Such would take care of my problem very simply.)

Thanks for any suggestions.

Save score with anew name.
Add three new single staves,
Set voice to voice 1
Select All, Copy
Set voices to voice 1
Click with cursor in first measure of first new staff
Paste.
So everything will be in the new staves.
(Check!)
Delete obsolete three stave-piano staff.

kind regards
Eveline

Hi, a,

For what it's worth, in Encore 5, lyric line selection is wholly separate from the matter of voices (which applies to notes, etc.). Lyrics also do not have a voice attribute.

Best regards,

Thanks to both of you for responding. Two fine solutions/options.

Soon after writing my question, I decided (since "all else" failed) to read the manual. I promptly discovered that I could select a "lyric voice" even when that voice was not "note selected"; this allows me to place the lyric vertically where I want. Not exactly "intuitive"; no doubt the Encore 5 treatment is much more user-friendly. (The voice selection in the case of lyric editing indeed *only* involves vertical screen placement in 4.5.) So, a really *simple* solution after all.

Once again, thanks for the really prompt help; I much appreciate it.
