Simpler compressed rest interface

Postby q » Sun Feb 26, 2012 6:43 pm

I just helped and Encore user who was very confused about compressed rests. She had a single compressed measure, and couldn't figure out how to make it 32 bars.

Ideally Encore would let the user edit the "number" and Encore would add the measures behind the scenes. Pretty simple.

She was pretty slack jawed when I explained she need to uncompress the existing measure, and 31 more, select the desired 32, and compress. And then it turned out she actually wanted 36 ... so around she went again.

... and why does the dialog open with "make compressed rest" unchecked?

Also, there's no direct way to merge adjacent compressed rests, such as a 32 bar compression and a 4 bar compression.

Hi q,
I can see the use case for this feature: one creates a part for a single instrument, without having (or needing) the whole score in Encore.

The current interface apparently is based on parts, created from a complete score.
If these parts need compressed rests, the empty measures are already in.

Interfaces that serve more then one use case can be nice, but tend to be much more complex.
Creating such versatile interfaces requires an open minded software designer.
Open to a large diversity of user's needs.

Lack of open mindedness of the designer leads to ...
For example: the current Change Pitch / Transpose dialog? The current display of instrument key values in Staff Sheet?

Kind regards
Eveline

Ain't that the truth.
