Strange symbol

Does anybody know the symbol that is twice in this picture, just above a note in each staff:

According to a MIDI version it would represent a kind of trill, with triplets on the second (and evt. third) fifth note.

I find this in a 2011 computerized version of a Purcell work.

Hi André,

New for me.
Not found with Google.
Not even in this very useful internet musical encyclopedia:

Best regards

Andre,

Could you post a larger segment of the work (like a whole page) and the title? We might be able to work backward from online performances.

Here follow the two pages where the symbol is present. And a print of how these measures are guessed by Encore.
So, I have an idea of how that must be played, but I would like to know the name and definition of the symbol.

Piece is "Ode to Saint-Cecilia" from Purcell, first choir "Hail Bright Cecilia". The occurence is in soloist parts (one in each voice), meas. 46 and 54.
No idea of origin of this print-out, I don't have the first page.

I have another print - from freescore - (where there are no solo part, the symbol is simply edited). The orniament is present in a MIDI file as a kind of "triplet trill" - that one has separate staves for the soloists.

All three attachments in jpg format - pdf not accepted - unfortunately I could not manage not to have it inline

Andre,

That's what I thought it was. I've attached a fragment from a lovely performance I found on YouTube by the Gabriel Consort & Players, dir. Paul McCreesh. It goes by quickly and sounds like just a quick trill.

Yes, that's one "Feature" of the phpBB forums. The way around that is to ZIP the files and then upload the ZIP file. Hotch has said he'd try to get PDF posting turned back on.

Still having problems attaching the .mp3 (ZIP) file. Will edit it in when I can. Until then, here's the YouTube link. page 11 starts at about 2:20.

Andre,

i sent the symbol to some musical friends and this is what I got back.

It’s an ornament and while I have never seen this combo, the three dots are a relish (short trill with an end/tail) and the fountain spring is sort of like a Couperin-type mordent, but may be just a decoration. Best guess is that it’s a doodle around the relish… Ketchup, anyone? Thanks for the brain teaser!!!

Sounds reasonable. Hope it helps.

Thanks Bob,

I also wanted to call it a "Fountain spring"...

I have searched on the meaning of the word "relish", I find it mostly related to taste. And one meaning in woodcraft - but the figurative link to what it's here does not raicome up in my mind...

Andre,

Yes, in this context "relish" relates to taste. She meant "something appetizing or savory added to a meal, as pickles or olives" and was making a bit of a play on words.
