Creating PDF files with Encore and MusicTime Deluxe

Portable Document Format (PDF) files allow documents generated by programs such as word processors and desktop publishers to be published electronically, preserving their original appearance, for viewing and printing on any system.

Encore and MusicTime Deluxe supports the creation of PDF files, provided you have a suitable PDF creator installed on your computer.

On Mac OS X using Encore or MusicTime Deluxe, you can generate PDF files directly as follows:

-Choose File > Print
-Click the Save as PDF button

* For Mac, an alternative package is Jaws PDF Creator, available from http://www.hallogram.com
_________________________________________________________

On WINDOWS using Encore or MusicTime Deluxe, you can generate PDF files directly by using the following softwares:

* For Windows, PDF Creator is a freeware that many users have had sucess with is: http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator I actually use it, it's the best one!
* For Windows, PrimoPDF also a freeware like PDF Creator is: http://www.primopdf.com/
* For Windows, CutePDF another freeware is: http://www.cutepdf.com
* For Windows, Free Printer a freeware is: http://www.documalis.com/free/fr_documa ... rinter.htm
* For Windows, PDFDrucker a freeware is: http://www.pdfdrucker.de/
* For Windows, WinPDF a freeware is: http://www.pdfdesk.com/winpdf.html
* For Windows, Go2PDF a freeware is: http://www.go2pdf.com/product.html
* For Windows, a cheaper commercial alternative than Adobe's is pdf995, available from http://www.pdf995.com
* For Windows, another alternative is pdfFactory, available from http://www.fineprint.com
* A cost-free alternative is to use Ghostscript, which is a PostScript Interpreter capable of creating PDF files. It is available for both Windows and Mac from http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/ and is updated frequently, although it can be difficult to set up at first.

PDF files are generated by software which installs and behaves like a printer driver. This means that creating a PDF is as simple as printing a file from Encore, choosing the appropriate ?printer? as you do so. For further instructions, consult the documentation that accompanies your PDF creation software.

To view PDF files, you need to have the free Adobe Reader software (http://www.adobe.com/products/reader/) installed on your computer. Download it from Adobe's web site. (http://www.adobe.com)

Cute PDF Writer

Postby Dulcilady on Sun Nov 04, 2007 9:23 am

I went to the first link you gave & it had expired so I tried a couple of the other links. The Cute PDF Writer downloaded with a message that I should also download the converter which took 2 tries but also worked. I was able to print out my sheet music to pdf just fine. Thanks for all of the links.

PDF writer programs for Windows

Postby Denkster on Tue Nov 06, 2007 9:55 pm

Watch out for PDF-Creator, the one I downloaded once had a keylogger inside..
Or maybe I should warn you to always check everything you download for malware. :(
By the way, you might want to try Foxit PDF Creator, anyway, I will try it.
Their PDF Reader is absolutely great! Lean and Mean, the absolute Acrobat killer!

The point in PDF documents is that people can view and print them even if they do not own the original software that they were made with.

BUT ....

PDF files are displayed using the fonts in the local computer's Windows/Fonts file. Encore and Music Times both use the "Anastasia" fonts - but the person who opens your PDF music file probably won't have the "Anastasia" fonts on HIS computer. So be shure you check the 'include fonts' (or whatever) box when you choose the options in your PDF software. The Anastasia fonts will be copied into the PDF file and will display properly on any computer.

By the way, I have been using PDFCreator (no space between 'PDF' and 'Creator') for years and am perfectly happy with it.

SourceForge's PDFCreator

Postby Rob M. on Sun Dec 30, 2007 11:25 pm

I'm baffled as to why Nor251's link to SourceForge's "PDFCreator" doesn't work. Google gave me essentially the same link, which worked just fine. The only difference was that Google's link added a trailing forward slash to the URL. For those that still have difficulty with that link, I'd suggest going to <http://sourceforge.net/> and searching for "PDFCreator".

Anyway, it seems that PDFCreator has just gone to version 0.9.5, so I'll try that and see how it works.

Denkster's caution is entirely appropriate. PDF-Creator is another program entirely, and is offered at <www.PDF-Creator.net>, not at SourceForge's site. Note the similarity of the name, and the URL of the website. Its creators are likely aiming to fool the careless and unitiated into downloading a malicious product. There is no lack of those out there now.

BTW -- don't go to PDF-Creator's website provided above. I clicked on it by accident when I was trying to select the URL for a copy-paste. My machine promptly blue-screened -- possibly because something fell off the rails when my anti-malware software kicked in to prevent a drive-by attack. Not suprisingly, I have not attempted to investigate further.
Cheers...

The link is now working, I have to delete the finale dot (.) at the end of the link.

And perhaps Denkster was indeed referring to PDFCreator (the Sourceforge product). I installed it -- and the IE Toolbar that's included in the package -- and got a warning from CounterSpy with my first use of it to the effect that memory had been altered "by spyware that could try to steal personal information from you" and made reference to "pdfforge.org". Sunbelt Software (the makers of CounterSpy) tell me that it was probably a false positive, but nevertheless, I uninstalled PDFCreator and the toolbar, cleaned up the Registry, and re-installed PDFCreator without the toolbar. I've received no further warnings. AV and spyware scans -- and other tests -- haven't turned up anything.

So it probably was a false positive thrown up by the toolbar that came with PDFCreator.
Cheers...

I couldn't recommend CutePDF enough, its free, supports embedding TrueType fonts (essential), output is very good and I know it to be spyware/malware clean (tested myself). I run it successfully on Windows ME and XP, I assume there should be no problems with Vista or 7 either, as far as I’m aware they have updated it every so often. Of course, be sure to download it from a reliable location such as SoftPedia (I love that site) or something...
