Setting velocity of individual notes

Postby commnthings » Wed Jul 15, 2009 2:23 am

In the "Feature Requests" section of the Forum there is a discussion on Dynamic Chasing

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2163

That gives rise to this: When you open the <Change Note Velocity> window you do not see the current velocity value of the selection but either the startup default of 64 or the last value you entered in the window. There is a Shortcut Key described on page 271 that opens a window showing the exact velocity of a single selected note and provides the capability to change it. This should be described in the manual.

Good point, Bob.

It is possible to view and edit the MIDI velocity property of any note, directly in the score, without opening the Notes>Change Velocity . Most people think of velocity as the note's volume, and for most purposes this notion is adequately apt.

To reveal a pop-up velocity menu:

      - On the Mac: [Command]+[shift]+[click] a note
      - For Windows: [Shift]+right click a note

    Options:

      - The popup velocity menu allows you see the current velocity property
      - It allows you to select a new value

You would not discover the velocity popup feature on your own. There is no cue user interface to inform you the feature exists. But now you know.

This is in the Manual 2009.3.1, page 191, in the Windows section of Menus:
To change just the ON velocity, click on the note while holding the [Shift]+[Command] keys. A pop up menu with velocities will open.

it should probably read something like

To change just the ON velocity, right-click on the note while holding the [Shift] key. A pop up menu with velocities will open.

Thanks for pointing this out, Bob. The description you found in the Windows chapter is actually the Mac command.
